She sat down at nine and could not have told you one thing she had done.
Not because it was a small day. Because it was a day made entirely of things too small to have names. A cardigan found. A dentist rung. A packed lunch that avoided the two things one of them will not eat and the one thing the other cannot. A tantrum absorbed at half past four with a calm she did not have and produced anyway.
If somebody had asked her at nine what she did today, she would have said nothing, really, and she would have been more tired than a person who had done something.
And here is the arrangement she cannot get out of her head this week.
None of it can be seen. All of it would be seen if it stopped.
If the cardigan were not found, that would show. If the dentist were not rung, that would show in six months. If nobody absorbed the half past four, everybody in that house would know by six. Her entire working life is only legible in the negative, and the reward for doing it well is a house where nothing appears to have happened.
That is your kitchen. That is your nine o'clock. And I want to hand you two verses about the size of things God looks at.

He came down to sparrows
Jesus is talking to people who are about to have a difficult time, and He wants to say something about how closely they are held. He could have reached for anything. Look what He reaches for.
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.Matthew 10:29-30
A farthing. Two sparrows. The cheapest possible thing in the market, sold in pairs because one on its own was not worth pricing.
And then hairs. Not counted as an estimate. Numbered, individually, which is an attention so far below the threshold of significance that it is almost a joke, except He says it perfectly seriously.
You are watched at that resolution. Not at the level of achievements. At the level of a found cardigan and an absorbed tantrum, which are exactly sparrow-sized things. The written word deliberately picks the smallest units it can find, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that live in a woman at nine at night rather than leaving it as a comfort for people in crisis.
Now let me say the honest thing about nothing, really, because you have said it about yourself for years.
It is not true, and it is not modesty either. It is what happens when a person has no vocabulary available for their own labor. There is no word for the thing you did at half past four. There is no unit for it. So it goes down as nothing, and a hundred nothings make a day, and the day goes down as nothing too.
You did a great many things today that have no names. One of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father, and the sparrow does not become significant first; it is watched at sparrow size. The Holy Spirit has been present for every unnameable thing in that house today.
And here is what I want you to notice about the tantrum, because it is the piece of work I would most like counted.
You did not have the calm. You produced it anyway, on borrowed reserves, at the worst hour of the day, for a person too small to understand what it cost. That is not household admin. That is somebody spending herself, quietly, on somebody who cannot thank her and should not have to.
You have been giving something today that has a price. The written word puts the Father's attention underneath the fall of a single sparrow, which means He was not too busy with large matters to be present at half past four. The Holy Spirit was in that kitchen for the whole of it.
The breakthrough is not somebody noticing.
It is nothing, really losing the right to describe your day.
You have been filing an enormous quantity of real labor under a word that means the absence of labor, and doing it in your own voice, which is the part I would most like to stop. The word is inaccurate. It was never a humble word. It was just the only one available.
You are seen at the size your work actually is. Not at the size the world can measure. At sparrow size, at hair-numbering size, which is the resolution the written word insists on. The Holy Spirit sees the found cardigan and the phone call and the half past four, and does not need a summary.
And nobody may ever say thank you. Small children are not built for it and it would be strange to require it of them. That is fine and it is not the point. The point is that unwitnessed by them has never once meant unwitnessed.
You have a Father who came down to farthings to describe how closely you are held. The very hairs of your head are all numbered, and the whole force of it is that no unit is too small for His attention. The Holy Spirit has been in every unnameable thing you did today, and today was not nothing.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak over your own day was given to you and no household issues it or takes it back. Speak to the house and to the word, never over your family. What God does with these years is His to decide, and however He answers it you are His today.
- House at nine at night, you hold a day of work nobody could list and you are not the record of it. The Word of God numbers the hairs of my head, so the things too small to name are exactly the size He watches.
- Word nothing, get out of my mouth in the name of Jesus. A hundred unnameable things is not an absence of labor, and I have been describing my own work in a word that was never true.
- God, You are in this kitchen and You were here at half past four when I had no calm and produced it anyway. Your written Word comes down to sparrows and farthings, and the Holy Spirit bears witness over these hands. Today counted here, and it counted all of it.
