Down two floors, past the kitchens, through the door with the sign that has been peeling since before she started.
It is warm down there in a way the rest of the building never is, and it smells of hot cotton, and the machines make a noise she stopped hearing in her second week and now cannot sleep without at home.
Twenty-two years.
Every bed in that hospital. Think about that for a second, because she never does: every single person who has been admitted to that building in twenty-two years has lain on something that came out of her hands, warm, folded, correct.
Not one of them has ever known she exists.
That is not a complaint. She has never once wanted a patient to think about the laundry, and a hospital where people lie there wondering about the sheets is a hospital doing something wrong.
But there was a moment last month. A woman from the wards came down looking for something and said, not unkindly, oh, I've never actually been down here, and went away again, and our reader stood by the folding table afterwards and felt something she could not name for about ten minutes.
Twenty-two years, and the building above her does not know the room exists.
That is your basement. That is your folding table. And I want to put a prayer into your hands that was written by a man in exactly your position, because it is the oldest prayer about unseen work there is.

The oldest prayer about hands
Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses, and it is a psalm about how short a life is and how much of it disappears. And at the very end of all that, he asks for one thing.
And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.Psalm 90:17
He asks it twice. He says it, and then he says it again the other way round, which is what people do with the thing they most want.
And what he asks for is not recognition. Not a monument, not a mention, not a legacy anybody could point at. He asks God to establish the work of hands, which means to make it stand, to give it permanence it cannot give itself.
You have work that God Himself establishes. Not work that is waiting for the wards to find out about it. The written word puts the establishing in His hands rather than in anybody's awareness, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that live in a woman at a folding table rather than leaving it as the last line of an old psalm.
Now let me say the honest thing about what happened last month, because you have been half ashamed of how much it stung.
It was not vanity. A woman said an ordinary sentence and it landed on twenty-two years, and what it touched was not pride. It was the very old human need to be located: to know that the room you spend your life in is on somebody's map.
You are not a small woman for feeling that. The written word has Moses himself asking God to make his work stand, which means the need for one's labor to amount to something is not a weakness. The Holy Spirit does not scold a woman for wanting her twenty-two years to be somewhere, and He has an answer that a map upstairs could never give.
And here is the answer, and it is better than being known about.
Everything you touch goes up. Every one of those sheets leaves that basement and reaches a bed, and the person in the bed is frightened or in pain or waiting for somebody, and the sheet is clean and warm and correct, and it does one small thing to make an unbearable day slightly more bearable. That happens hundreds of times a day, and it happens because of hands, and the hands are yours.
You have been reaching every floor of that building for twenty-two years. Establish thou the work of our hands, and God has been doing exactly that: your work has been standing in rooms you have never entered, for people whose names you will never learn. The Holy Spirit has carried it up out of that basement every single day.
The breakthrough is not somebody coming down to say thank you.
It is the map changing.
You have been reading your twenty-two years off a building that does not know the room exists, and a building is not a reliable witness to anything. It only knows what it has been told, and nobody tells it about basements.
You are established by God and located by Him. The written word puts the standing of your work in His hands, twice over, and He does not consult the wards. The Holy Spirit bears witness in a warm room two floors down, and He has been the one carrying it up all along.
And I am not going to tell you that recognition is coming. It may not, ever, and you would not want a fuss anyway. What I am telling you is that the absence of it has never once been the same thing as the absence of a result.
You have hands that God has been establishing for twenty-two years. Yea, the work of our hands establish thou it, said twice by a man who knew how fast a life goes. The Holy Spirit has answered that prayer over you daily, in a room with a peeling sign, and every bed in that building is the evidence.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak over your own work was given to you and no hospital issues it or takes it back. Speak to the room and to the ache, never over the people upstairs. What God does with this job, and whether anybody ever comes down, is His to decide, and however He answers it you are His today.
- Laundry in this basement, you are where the work starts and you are not where it is counted. The Word of God says establish thou the work of our hands, so my hands are established by Him and not by the map upstairs.
- Ache that says twenty-two years happened in a room nobody knows about, go, in the name of Jesus. Moses asked for the same thing I want, and the answer he was given was God and not an audience.
- God, You are in this basement and You have carried my work up to every floor of this building. Your written Word puts the establishing in Your hands, and the Holy Spirit bears witness over these ones. It stands here, and it has stood for twenty-two years.
