Monday MorningJoshua 1:9

The Gate Signs You In as a Number

This message is for A site foreman signing on at a gate where nobody has ever heard him say a word about God needs to walk through it as himself and not as a smaller, quieter version.

The gate reads the card, thinks about it for a second, and clicks.

Same click every morning for two years. Half past six, the hoarding still wet, the tower crane above him not turning yet, and the little green light that says the system has decided he is allowed on.

He is a foreman. Twenty-six years in the trade, and he is good, and the men like him, which is not nothing. And somewhere between the car and that gate, every single morning, something in him gets quieter.

Not dishonest. He does not lie about anything. Nobody has ever asked him a direct question and got a false answer. It is smaller than that and harder to name: he simply goes down a gear. The part of him that prayed on the drive over, the part that woke up thinking about his daughter and thanking God she is through the worst of it, that part steps back from the front of the man and stands somewhere near the back, and a working version takes the wheel.

Two years he has done that, and last Tuesday he caught himself doing it, and could not get the thought out of his head all day: does God come through the gate, or does He wait in the van?

That is your gate. That is your gear change. And I have kept buildings my whole life, so let me talk to you the way I would over a flask at half six, because there is a bad idea in that question and it needs pulling out at the root.

The Gate Signs You In as a Number

Where the command was actually given

Here is the thing about that verse everybody quotes off a fridge magnet. It was not given in a good room.

Joshua is standing on the wrong side of a river with a dead leader behind him and a job in front of him that he did not ask for, and God does not hand him a feeling. God hands him an order and a fact fastened together.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.Joshua 1:9

Read the last four words like a man reading a spec, because that is where the whole load sits. Whithersoever thou goest. Not wherever you worship. Not wherever the company is comfortable with it. Wherever you go, which on a Monday means through a gate, past a hoarding, into a site canteen with a kettle that takes nine minutes.

You are walked in with. Not met later. Not waiting outside in the van until the shift is over. The written word puts God's presence in the going, not in the destination, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a live fact in a man rather than a nice line on a magnet. He came through the gate. He did not need the card.

Now let me say the part you have been half afraid of, and then take the fear off it.

Going quiet is not the sin you think it is.

There is a kind of quiet that is denial, and you would know if you were doing it, because it costs something in your chest when you do. That is not what has been happening at half six. What has been happening is a man with sense working out that a scaffold at dawn is not a place for a speech, and that is not cowardice. That is knowing the room. Most of Scripture's working people were quiet at work. Joseph ran a household for years before anybody got a sermon out of him.

You are not two men. You have been afraid you were, and you are not. The written word says God is with you wherever you go, which means there is one of you and He is with him, and the Holy Spirit does not follow the version of you that talks about God and lose interest in the one who talks about drainage. He has been on that site for two years.

And here is what I want you to see about your trade, because you have been undervaluing it in a way that would surprise you.

You keep men safe. That is what a foreman does when he does it right. Every morning you look at edges and loads and whether the boards are dogged down properly, and because you are careful, men who have no idea your name go home to their kids with all their fingers. There is no verse anywhere that calls that secular. There is a great deal of Scripture about not putting a man's life at risk for the sake of a day's speed, and you have been obeying it before breakfast for twenty-six years without once calling it obedience.

You have been doing God's work at that gate all along. The written word ties His presence to your going, and the Holy Spirit does not sort your week into the parts He attends and the parts He tolerates. Careful is a form of love. It has been counted as one.

The breakthrough

The breakthrough is not becoming a man who says something at the gate.

It is the gate losing the power to sort you into two.

That click was never a border between a life with God and a life without one. It is a card reader on a fence. It grants access to a building site, which is the whole of its authority, and it has been quietly promoted in your imagination to something that decides which version of a man is permitted through.

Demote it.

You are one man walking on. Whole, in the boots, with the flask and the paperwork and the tower crane starting up behind you. The written word commands courage and then gives the reason, and the reason is not your nerve. It is His company. The Holy Spirit makes that company real at half past six on a wet morning, and He was not waiting in the van.

And do not go making a rule out of this either. Nothing here says you should announce anything today, and nothing here says you should not. If a man asks you a straight question one day, answer him straight. If nobody asks for another two years, you have not failed at anything, because the verse commanded presence and courage, and it never once commanded a speech.

You have His courage for the ordinary version of today. Not a heroic day. This one, with the delivery late and the drawings changed again. The written word says be strong and of a good courage, and then anchors it to the fact that He is with you rather than to anything you can work up. The Holy Spirit carries the fact. You carry the boots.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak over your own morning was given to you and no gate issues it or takes it back. Speak to the gate and to the fear, never to the men you work with. What God does on this site, and with the whole of this job, is His to decide, and however He answers it you are His today.

  1. Site gate at half past six, you sign in a number and you do not decide which man walks past you. The Word of God says He is with me whithersoever I go, so He came through with me and He did not need a card.
  2. Fear that going quiet means I left Him at the hoarding, get off me in the name of Jesus. There is one man in these boots, and the God who commanded courage put Himself in the going, not in the good rooms.
  3. God, You are on this site and You were here before the crane turned. Your written Word puts You beside me wherever I go, and the Holy Spirit bears witness at a gate on a wet morning. I walk on whole, and I have been walking on whole for two years.
