The Unthanked Shift2 Chronicles 16:9

The Errors That Never Reached the Page

This message is for A proofreader whose entire job is catching mistakes before anyone sees them needs meaning for work whose only evidence is a page with nothing wrong on it.

Eleven, last Thursday. She counted, which she does not usually do, and afterwards she wished she had not.

A wrong date in a caption. A name spelled two ways in the same paragraph. A figure that had lost a nought somewhere between the spreadsheet and the copy, which would have been the sort of thing people remember for years.

She caught all eleven. The document went out. It was fine.

And that is the entire problem with her job, laid out plainly: her good work leaves no evidence. When she does it perfectly, what exists in the world is a page with nothing wrong on it, and a page with nothing wrong on it looks exactly like a page nobody checked.

Nine years. In nine years she has been mentioned in a meeting once, and it was the week something got through.

She is not bitter. She likes the work and she is unreasonably good at it. But last Thursday she sat back after the eleventh one and had a thought that has not left her: the better I am, the less proof there is that I was here at all.

That is your desk. That is your Thursday. And I want to answer that properly, because the arithmetic of your job is genuinely strange and God has not misunderstood it.

The Errors That Never Reached the Page

What His eyes are looking for

There is a line in Chronicles that gets used as a warning and was originally spoken as an enormous encouragement.

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.2 Chronicles 16:9

Run to and fro throughout the whole earth. That is active looking. Not a general awareness, not a distant overview. Searching, deliberately, everywhere.

And notice what He is searching for. Not for faults. He is looking for people whose heart is right toward Him, in order to show Himself strong on their behalf. It is a verse about God hunting for somebody to back.

You are being actively looked for. Not overlooked, not passed by, not filed under work that leaves no trace. The written word has God's own eyes running through the whole earth, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that live in a woman at a desk with a red pencil rather than a line she has heard preached at somebody else.

Now hear the strange arithmetic of your work spoken out loud, because it deserves to be.

You are paid to make things not happen. The eleven errors do not exist. Nobody can be shown them. There is no version of your Thursday that can be demonstrated to anybody, because the whole achievement is an absence, and absences cannot be displayed.

That is a hard trade to be excellent in, and it is not self-pity to say so.

You are not invisible to the One doing the looking. To and fro throughout the whole earth, and the search is not conducted through reports and meeting minutes. The Holy Spirit was at your shoulder for all eleven, and He does not need a record produced afterwards to know what happened.

And here is the part I want you to hold when the next set of proofs lands.

A figure that had lost a nought would have gone into the world and been believed. Somebody would have made a decision on it. The reason that did not happen is a woman at a desk on a Thursday afternoon who reads slowly on purpose.

You have prevented real harm that nobody will ever be able to name. The written word has God showing Himself strong on behalf of people whose hearts are right toward Him, and yours is right or you would have stopped reading carefully years ago. The Holy Spirit has been the strength in nine years of slow reading.

The breakthrough

The breakthrough is not being credited.

It is the clean page stopping being a verdict.

You have been reading a document with nothing wrong on it as evidence that you were not needed, when it is the precise opposite: it is the only form your excellence can take. A clean page is your signature. It just looks like everybody else's.

You are the reason that page was fine. The written word describes a God who actively runs the whole earth looking for people to strengthen, which means He is not waiting to be told about you by a meeting. The Holy Spirit knows exactly which eleven things did not happen last Thursday.

And no, I will not promise that a meeting will mention you next quarter. It may not. That is genuinely outside anything this page can say, and it would be a cheap thing to offer you.

You have work that is fully known in the only place that could hold it. To shew himself strong in the behalf of them, and the strength is offered to the person rather than to their reputation. The Holy Spirit has been running to and fro through nine years of proofs, and He has not missed one.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak over your own work was given to you and no employer issues it or takes it back. Speak to the page and to the thought, never over the people you work with. What God does with this job, and whether anyone ever mentions it, is His to decide, and however He answers it you are His today.

  1. Page that went out clean, you show nothing wrong and you do not show the eleven things I stopped. The Word of God says His eyes run to and fro through the whole earth, so my Thursday was not unwitnessed.
  2. Thought that says the better I am the less I existed, go, in the name of Jesus. A clean page is my signature, and it is the only form excellence in this trade can take.
  3. God, You are at this desk and Your eyes were on all eleven. Your written Word has You searching the earth for somebody to strengthen, and the Holy Spirit has been the strength in nine years of slow reading. I am found here, and I have been found all along.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
