Waiting for the Right Conditions

He has a very clear picture of what praying properly looks like, and he has never once managed it.

It involves a chair, half an hour, no phone, a clear head, and preferably the early morning before anybody is up. He got it from somewhere years ago, probably from a man he admired, and it has sat in the back of his mind ever since as the standard.

What he actually has is this: boots off at the back door at twenty past six, a kettle, forty minutes before food is on the table, and a head full of a job that did not go right.

So he does not do it. Not out of rebellion. He looks at the conditions, decides they are not the ones, and thinks properly, at the weekend, and the weekend has its own list, and this has been the pattern for something like three years.

The strange part is that he prays constantly. On the ladder. In the van. Half a sentence at a time, all day, every day, without ever once counting it as prayer, because it does not look anything like the chair and the half hour.

That is your back door. That is your standard. And I want to speak to it, because Paul gives an instruction about prayer that cannot possibly mean what you have been picturing.

Short, or it could not be constant

Paul is finishing a letter with a run of very short commands, and one of them is three words long.

Pray without ceasing.1 Thessalonians 5:17

Sit with the arithmetic of that for a second.

If prayer required a chair, half an hour and a clear head, then without ceasing would be an instruction nobody in human history could obey, including Paul, who worked with his hands and traveled and was frequently in custody.

The command only makes sense if the thing commanded is short. Constant and brief. A line at a time, all day long, into whatever you happen to be doing, which is exactly and precisely what you have been doing on the ladder for three years without giving yourself any credit for it.

You have been praying constantly and calling it nothing. Not failing at prayer for three years. The written word commands an unceasing kind, which by its own logic must be brief, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that live in a man with half a sentence going up a ladder.

Now let me say something about the standard, because it deserves a fair hearing rather than a demolition.

The chair and the half hour are good. The man you got it from probably meant it, and it probably served him. It is a fine thing when a life allows it.

What it is not is the definition. It got promoted somewhere along the way from a good practice to the only real version, and that promotion is where three years went.

You are not under a rule God did not make. The written word gives you a three word command and no conditions attached to it. The Holy Spirit has never once required you to be in a chair.

And now the thing underneath, which is not about scheduling.

You have a suspicion that the short ones do not count. That they are the small change and the real currency is the half hour, and God has been receiving nothing but coppers from you since 2022.

You are not offering Him something inferior. Without ceasing, and the word rules out the long and rare by definition. The Holy Spirit has been receiving every half sentence from the van and the ladder, and He has not been waiting for the weekend version.
