The washing machine goes into its spin at twenty to seven and the whole flat starts to hum.
She is at the table because there is nowhere else to be. A maths book is open at a page nobody has looked at for an hour. There is a bowl of clementines, a phone charger with no phone on the end of it, the electricity key, and a drying rack behind her chair with four school shirts on it that will not be dry by morning. Through the wall the neighbor has the football on, and the commentary comes through as a low crowd noise with no words in it. Somebody in the back bedroom wants a drink of water.
She opened the Bible app four times today. Twice in a queue, once on a bus, once standing up in this kitchen with the tap running. She has heard, more than once and always kindly, that what she needs is a quiet place. Early. Before the house wakes. A room where you shut the door.
This flat has four rooms. The only door with a lock is the bathroom, and there is always somebody standing outside it.
So here is the thing she has never once said out loud, and would be embarrassed to, because it sounds like an accusation and it is not meant as one. She has quietly concluded that God is available on conditions she cannot produce. That the meeting happens in quiet, and she has no quiet. That there is holy ground somewhere, and none of it is in this postcode.
You know the thought. It comes at the end of the day, not the start, and it never announces itself as unbelief, because it does not feel like unbelief. It feels like arithmetic.

What God asked for, the first time He asked for an altar
Start where the pain actually is, because pretending it is smaller than it is helps nobody.
You are not tired of God. You are tired of the gap between the life you are living and the conditions you have been told the meeting requires. You have been carrying a low, constant sense of being behind: behind on prayer, behind on stillness, behind on people who seem to have a chair by a window and forty undisturbed minutes. And under that there is something heavier, which is the suspicion that the crowdedness of your life is itself the disqualification. That if you were more organized, or lived somewhere else, or had a spare room, you would have the thing you keep reaching for.
Nobody set out to put that weight on you. It arrived by accident, from advice that was meant well and was never checked against the text. So let us check it, because the text is not vague here and it is a great deal older than the advice.
The mountain had just shaken. Thunder, smoke, a nation standing back at a distance. God had spoken the ten words in a voice that terrified everyone who heard it. And then, in the next breath, He tells them how to build the place where they will meet Him.
He asks for earth.
in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.Exodus 20:24
An altar of earth. Dirt. The cheapest, most available material in the whole world, the one thing nobody has to save up for or apply for or be given permission to use. And the very next verse says that if you would rather build it of stone, then do not use cut stone, because a tool lifted against it profanes it.
Read that again slowly, because it is the opposite of what religion does by instinct. The upgrade is the disqualification. God did not want the version that had been worked on. He asked for the ground that was already there.
You are not disqualified by having nothing prepared. Not waiting for a better version of your home. The written word asks for dirt and refuses the upgrade in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that live at a table with the machine still going.
And then look at the address clause, which is the sentence people skip. He does not say in a room. He does not say in the place you have set aside. He says in all places where I record my name. The location clause is a name clause. Where His name is remembered, He comes. That is the entire postcode requirement, and your kitchen satisfies it exactly as written.
You have an address that already qualifies. The written word makes the requirement a name rather than a room, and the Holy Spirit has been in that kitchen every evening you decided it did not count.
There is a man in Genesis who found this out with a stone under his head. No building, no room, no arrangements at all, running for his life and sleeping in the open with nothing to hand. He woke up and said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. Then he took the stone he had been sleeping on, the ordinary object that had been in the wrong job all night, stood it up, and called the place the house of God.
He did not go and get better materials. He used what was already on the ground.
You have what you need on the table in front of you. The written word turns a stone that had been a pillow into the house of God without anybody fetching anything, and the Holy Spirit does not require better materials than the ones already in the room.
And when a woman asked Jesus, at a well, the location question, which mountain and which city, He did not answer with a place at all. He told her the hour had come when the Father is worshipped in spirit and in truth. The question was about geography. The answer was about a Person, and that Person is not somewhere else this evening.
Hear what this is not. It is not a new practice to keep up, not a discipline to fail at by Thursday, and not a system with a streak that breaks. I am not handing you one more thing to be behind on. And it is not a downgrade either, not a smaller portion for people who could not manage the proper version. The proper version was dirt. It was dirt before there was a tabernacle, a temple, or anyone alive who could have felt superior about it.
You are not being handed a smaller portion. The written word puts the earth altar first, before any building existed to compare it with, and the Holy Spirit is not offering you a reduced version of something other people get properly.
You have been waiting for a room, and the address was given to you a long time before you were born.
Put down the waiting. Not because the waiting was foolish, but because it was aimed at a condition God never set. He did not ask for silence. He did not ask for solitude. He did not ask for a spare room, a candle, an early alarm, or a version of your life with fewer people in it. He asked for ground, and He said that where His name is spoken, He comes.
The table you are sitting at is ground. The noise through the wall does not vote. The child who wants water does not disqualify the hour. This is not a lesser thing you are settling for. It is the oldest thing there is, and it is happening tonight, in the middle of everything, exactly as it was designed to.
You are meeting Him tonight on ground that was always enough. The written word set the condition at earth and a name, and it has never been revised. The Holy Spirit is at that table now, with the noise through the wall and the child who wants water.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud, standing at the table, with the space already cleared and everything else still going on around you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what this table is has been given to you and it is not waiting on a room. The God who asked for an altar of dirt asks for faith of about the same size, a seed's worth, and He asks for it out loud, because Jesus gave the smallest faith He could name a mountain to speak to. The mountain here is a settled idea that God keeps office hours in a quiet place you do not have, so say it to that idea, over the bare wood, where you are standing. However He answers the rest of your evenings, that part is His to decide.
- Table, you are ground enough, and I set this cleared corner apart in the name of Jesus. The Word of God says the altar was to be made of earth, and that in every place where He records His name He comes and He blesses, so this is not a lesser place, it is the named one.
- Accusation that God is only found in quiet rooms, get out of this kitchen. Jesus told a woman at a well that the Father is worshipped in spirit and in truth, and I hold the ground He named. Holy Spirit, You are welcome at this table, in the middle of everything.
- Lord, You are here while the machine spins and the homework is out, and I thank You, because You have never once asked me to leave my crowded life in order to come and meet You. You are the God who asked for dirt and came to a stone under a sleeping man's head, and You are at this table with me now.
